Shabby door hanger vintage art tutorial

Today I wanted to come up with a quick easy DIY project for small gifts. One being for my daughter for Valentine's Day. She celebrates her birthday this day.

I went to the Graphic's Fairy to find some prints I could use for my project. I found quite a few I liked and printed them out in a 3"x5" size. Here is the one I am going to use for my daughter Sami.

I cut a cedar board a little larger than the size of the photo.

I painted the board pink, then distressed it with my palm sander. If you don't own a palm sander, this is simple enough to do by hand with a piece of sandpaper.

Next I decopodged the image onto my wood. Many people use modpodge to do this. I have a less expensive method I use. I take Elmer's Glue and water it down slightly.

Once my image is glued to the board, I cover the top of the image and the entire top of the board with the solution of my version of modpodge. This seals the image in and gives the art an even glazed appearance.

When the glue is dry, I spray a coat of Min Wax polyurethane on top...

Lastly, I screw two eye hooks to the top of the board.

I use ribbon or scrap burlap to tie through the eye hooks. The finished product can be hung on the wall, drawer pulls, or door knobs.

Here is the one I made for Sami along with a few others....

This idea is great for small gifts, stocking stuffers, Easter baskets, teacher's gifts, grab bags, or simply for yourself...

Have a great day....

  1. looks fabulous! i love the color you painted on the board with it.
btw- went back to UO today and the clearance curtains i loved are sold out... the other ones i am now on the fence about after reading their reviews. ugh!

  2. I love it...simple and sweet!

  3. What a sweet Valentine for Sami! And the others are very cool gifts. My B-Day is the day after Valentine's Day so it has always been a special holiday for me.

  4. These are so cute and so adaptable to the situation, event, holiday, or individual!

  5. Um YOU'RE ADORABLE and super duper creative. I always loved seeing your latest creation!! xo

  6. Love these Lisa, the TP made me laugh, but in a good way, I love them all!!!

  7. Simply beautiful:-)
    Hugs, Biljana

  8. I love how much detail you put into it. Even the ribbon that holds up the frame is artistic.
