Inexpensive window treatments make a huge statement.....

Onto project #4 for the family room makeover......

Project #3

My old curtains were purchased years ago at the Christmas Tree Shops. They were green velvet tab top. Since then, I am not a fan of tab top anymore. Plus they were faded from the sun and just outright dirty because of the wood stove we use continuously in this room. In addition the wooden rods were practically breaking in half.

As you can see, my windows are huge and can end up costing me a fortune seeing how much draperies cost these days. One panel alone at Pottery Barn is $100 for an inexpensive one. Since this room is still yet to be gutted and refinished, I am trying to spend very minimal money on the makeover. Our new couches and the window treatments are the only money I am spending. The rest I am utilizing what I already have.

I decided to go with Ikea. They have thick white curtains (almost a canvas feel) that cost $14.99 a pair. I needed 4 pair. They only had tab top in the style I wanted, so I knew I could just sew the top over. The rods were only $7.99 each. I needed 4 of these. Here is the final result:

Seeing that I am cheap thrifty, I did not want to spend a lot on tie backs. Have you seen how expensive it is for one of these? They were $10 for a pair at Walmart, which would have cost me almost $40 for the 8 I needed. Plus, the way I have the curtains pulled back, they wouldn't even show.....

So, can you tell what inexpensive plan I came up with?

I purchased white hooks from Walmart at only $1 a piece. They work like a charm.

  2. PRETTY!!! They look really beautiful, especially with that winter wonderland in the background. GREAT windows! I don't buy tiebacks's either. I actually use small cup cooks screwed into the wall, and then I use a ribbn or some trim to wrap around the curtain and secure it to the hook. Not a great solution if you will want to open and close them a lot, but works for my sitch :)
