Back in December I started to re-do my living around some new couches that we purchased. Yes, they were supposed to be here 2 months ago and still have yet to arrive. I won't even get into the drama of this....Anyway, in the meantime, I have been working on small projects. I have two wing chairs someone gave to me about 6 years ago. They have great bones, but the print is drastically outdated for me. They are plaid and I am so out of this phase. I can't afford new chairs so I was going to get slipcovers for them. The least expensive ones I found were from JC Penny's for $80 each. The problem is, they look like slipcovers! I hate the tucking and un-tucking that occurs with slipcovers.
So that is where my HATE relationship comes in with reupholstry. I have decided to spend $20 on two dropcloths from Home Depot and I am going to tackle this project. I have already started and am stressing already. See, I've even sidetracked here to my blog. If it were a painting project I'd be done already....
I expect it will take me a few days to finish these two chairs because the attention span will not be there, but here is my beginning....
Hopefully I'll be sharing the finished products soon. The one thing I have going for me is that I hate leaving things half done....
yup- that is the same reason i paint! i think we were cut from the same cloth, lisa. and it wasn't upholstery cloth.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see how they came out. I'll bet they will be so good that you will be looking for more things to recover. That is what I did, lol I love the idea of using a drop cloth too. They are sturdy and pretty:) Have fun, can't wait to see the finished results.

Wow, don't be stressed b/c I'm already impressed! My poetry should help calm you down (hee hee hee). Seriously, it looks great already but my question is, have you already stapled in the top, which looks very smooth right now? I think your chairs are going to turn out fabulous and it's good for a creative person, such as yourself, to be challenged every once in a while!

ReplyDeleteYeah...I get the not getting upholstery thing. I can paint any day and wouldn't know where to start with redoing a whole chair. You are a brave woman!

ReplyDeleteThese chairs have great bones and well worth salvaging. I know what you mean about the slipcovers looking like slipcovers though. I hate trying to keep them tucked in. Part of the reason I decided to make my own. You can do it. This chair looks fabulous so far. Try not to stress, gurl! At least the seat cushion is square and not a t-cushion. I can't wait to see how they turn out. If you don't post in a few days, I'll send for help ...lol!

I couldn't agree more with you. I have tried multiple times to learn how to sew & use the sewing machine. Just plain do not like or enjoy it.

You're off to a great start! I don't sew either and I just made a slipcover for a wing back chair. Know what? It was pretty easy to do once I started. If I can do it, anybody can! I always use drop cloth too for fabric, it washes so well and I love the texture it has. Good luck! Visiting from FJI Slipcover theme linkup.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure they'll come out fine--there really isn't much sewing involved with reupholstering, just the cushion and possibly the welting. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI have attempted this myself. Yes, it is doable but very labor intensive. I read on one person's blog where she said, each piece is different and you just have to roll with each step.
