My new french chic coffee table

I have been wanting a round coffee table for the longest time. I have been patient and knew something would eventually come along. The other night I found my "new table" at Savers for $10. It was an ugly duckling, but I saw the potential.

First I sanded the top down. Although I got the majority of the maple colored stain off, there were still knicks and dings that I left alone because I loved the shabby appeal.

The legs were shiny, so I just scuffed them up a bit then primed them with Bin. In addition I binned the nasty bottom of the table. I know no one will ever see this, but I wanted to clean it up anyway. After that, I gave the base two coats of white paint then distressed it.

Finally, I gave the top two coats of dark walnut Min Wax stain. Then I gave it two coats of a flat polyurethane. I wanted to keep the rustic look, therefore didn't want to go with a shiny poly. I also added stain to the legs then wiped it to get rid of a bit of the stark white.

I am usually pretty critical of my pieces and always find something I am not happy with. But, I must say I am in love with this table!

  1. This definitely has that 'rustic' look to it! It compliments the other furniture in the room so well and looks beautiful on that rug! Your patience paid off! I looked for a round coffee table for a long time too.

  9. Lisa, You did a beautiful job on it! And it cost $10??? What a great buy!! I bet you were so excited to find the size you wanted for that price.

I would've sealed the bottom of it somehow too. Wouldn't want old yucky stuff under there. :)

    Great job!

  21. I loved the color of your stain on the table, so I got the same, minwax dark walnut to use on one of my side tables. I did one coat and it is super dark! I had it stripped and sanded down. Any tips?

    1. The only thing I could recommend Jenny would be to go with a lighter stain or prime and paint the piece for a totally different look...Different woods take to stain differently, hence the reason yours might have looked darker then mine...Good luck!

  22. so wait. you put white paint on the whole table after you sanded it, and then heavily resanded the top before you put stain on it?

  23. You got a great deal on it and you turned it from a boring table into a trendy rustic look. You really are amazing at fixing things up.
